Reading fraudster jailed

A man who used a fake passport to get a job in Reading has been jailed for 12 months.

41-year-old Muhammed Afzal was arrested whilst working at a McDonalds on the Oxford Road earlier this month.

The Pakistani national, who had overstayed his visa, was using a Norwegian passport to claim he had the right to work in the UK.

During a hearing at Reading Crown Court on Monday 26 July, he pleaded guilty to all five charges and was sentenced to twelve months in prison. Afzal will also face deportation at the end of his sentence.

Sergeant John Donachy, from the UK Border Agency's Thames Valley Immigration Crime Team, said: "We welcome the prison term handed down in this case. Hopefully, it will be a deterrent to others who think they can cheat the system.

"Using a forged or counterfeit passport is a serious offence and anyone who does so can expect to face criminal proceedings, jail and removal from the country."
