Council Tax debt soars in Reading

More people in Reading had bailiffs knocking at their door for unpaid council tax than anywhere else in Berkshire last year.

5,255 households received a visit - another 1,517 were made bankrupt by the courts for their council tax debt.

New official figures also reveal that that a record 3.1 million households are now in severe council tax difficulties and face liability orders for unpaid council tax. In Reading, 42,763 liability orders have been issued. These orders allow councils to seize money from wage packets/benefits or commence bailiff proceedings.

Reading East MP Rob Wilson said, "Thanks to Gordon Brown and our Labour-run Council doubling council tax bills, a record number of families in my constituency are struggling to pay their bills. When you realise that this Government has made so many families worse off in this recession, the last thing they needed was higher taxes. That's why I am pleased we will ensure that there is no Council Tax increase for at least two years. Where there are Conservative Councils many are cutting Council Tax! Many more people now face the threat of menacing bailiffs knocking at their door - this is a crisis of Labour's making."
