The Scene: A restaurant in London. Margaret is already seated when Nick arrives. 'Hello Margaret,' says Nick. Margaret rolls her eyes in despair then says: 'I didn't know whether to roll my eyes in despair or just look extremely stern, but in the end opted for the eyes.'
'I see,' says Nick. 'In that case, would you mind if I raised an eyebrow in disbelief and then frowned deeply?'
'I would not,' says Margaret, while doing her extremely stern look because, if you do have a second look, why not use it?
Nick sits and they pick up their menus. 'What do you fancy?' he asks, still frowning deeply. 'I'm not sure yet,' says Margaret, 'but do believe it is my turn to do frowning deeply. You can do rolling your eyes in despair, if you like.'
'Very well then,' says Nick, rolling his eyes in despair and then adding: 'Might I raise an eyebrow in disbelief, too?'
'Yes', says Margaret, I am not due to raise an eyebrow in disbelief until ten past eight, at the very earliest.'
The meal does not last long, as it is hard to keep an evening going if you have only four expressions between you. 'Oh my god,' says Nick as they exit the restaurant. 'We forgot to do looking thoughtful while tapping a pencil!'
'You're right!' exclaims Margaret while raising an eyebrow in disbelief, as it is now ten past eight.
'We could always go back to my place to do some thoughful pencil tapping,' suggest Nick.
'As well as the pencil tapping, we could slyly observe each other from behind pillars for a bit, if you like,' adds Margaret.
And so they jump into a taxi, pulses racing.
NOTE: The above won't mean anything to you if you don't watch The Apprentice! I'd like to take the credit for it, but actually stole it from Deborah Ross, The Non-Domestic Goddess in the Daily Mail on Saturday, April 19th. Good work Deb!
